Second opinion please

Hi Sarcastic ShockwaveLover. Thanks again for your few very nice comments on FPC page! I corrected File:Preparation for schooner race.jpg.I know it is better but is it good enough? Can I please ask you for a second opinion?--Two+two=4 (talk) 03:03, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey, thank you for creating this template. However, I just wanted to tell you that we already have such a template. You might be interested in merging the templates. Let me know if you need any help. --The Evil IP address (talk) 11:25, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

  • I was planning on modifying the original template to begin with, but I wasn't sure how the autolanguage feature would react (or indeed how it worked) so I decided to start over. If you can help me merge the two, I'd be much obliged. Sarcastic ShockwaveLover (talk) 12:46, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
    • I would just add some line like "Please refer to its delisting nomination for the reasons why its assessment has been removed." to the specific language revisions, like /en, /de and so on. This should work without any big problems. --The Evil IP address (talk) 13:06, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

I saw the icon you created for FPC today, and just wanted to mention that I really like it. IMO it should stay there, and maybe migrate to WP as well. Cheers! -- JovanCormac 16:14, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Sarcastic ShockwaveLover!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

FPC discussions

Sorry about the delay in replying, real life (tm) intervened and I only had the chance to dip in and out quickly today :-). I know what you mean, the discussion phase wasn't moving very fast and all sorts of diversions. But the premature vote appears to have stimulated a bit of discussion. Technically the FP talk page might have been a better place for the discussion, but the FPC talk page is more likely to be on peoples watchlists. If (when :-) we get a result, we can create a suitable home for it. --Tony Wills (talk) 07:50, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

POTY predictions

Just for fun, I have compiled a list of my personal predictions for this year's POTY top ten at User:JovanCormac/POTYPredictions/2009. I wonder whether you agree with some, most, or none of them? (Note: Those are not my favourites, but those pictures I believe will actually make the top 10). Cheers, JovanCormac 13:29, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

FPC

Hi, thanks for the note. I have a few ideas now about what people will support and not. But a couple of things I don't quite get - since I'm not a photographer - is what do people mean by "noise" and "artefacts"? Also there is a user who opposes pictures saying they have been "posterized". Not sure what that means either. If I can lean what these things are, I can look for them in images and know not to nominate them, unless the problems can be fixed. I've also read about denoising for example. I really enjoy editing images, so learning how to clean them up would be great. :) --Silversmith Hewwo 23:46, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

No trouble, I had exactly the same problems when I first started.

'Noise' is the term given to excessive amounts of variation at colour on an image. They usually make an image look really grainy. Have a look at en:Image noise for more information, and some examples. These pictures were very noisy before they were edited.

'Artefacts' (or JPEG Artefacts) are distortions that occur to an image after it has been heavily compressed, or has had something go wrong whilst saving it. These usually manifest themselves as blocky or checkerboard areas on the picture, and are best found while viewing at full-size in an image editor. This image shows some.

When an image looks 'posterized', that means that it looks like this. The number of colours has been reduced and there are abrupt changes between colour bands. For Featured picture, this is not good. The term comes from 'posters', which don't generally have many details.

As for editing images - it's something I'm trying to learn myself. I use GIMP, and have been working through tutorials on various websites.

I find the Commons:Image guidelines to be quite useful for when I'm considering nominating an image, but if you're unsure, feel free to ask me or another FPC regular for an opinion.

Sarcastic ShockwaveLover (talk) 00:19, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

    • Thank you, I have a much better understanding now. I do find it a bit tricky though, that an image like this will get lots of support, but still have quite a few oppose voters. I've been trying to decide if this is good enough to nominate. What do you think?
Insect macros are becoming increasingly hard to get to FP status, as we've seen so many high quality ones, and most of the really amazing ones have been promoted. The one you've linked me too isn't likely to pass, in my opinion, due to overexposure and harsh lighting. If you look at the image full-size, you'll see that the white areas are the same colour as the page background, and that there's a loss of detail on the underside; you can see a noticeable 'halo' effect around the insects. the same overexposure can be seen on the plant, with all the white parts being much brighter than is natural. People have come to expect a much higher standard of quality and composition from insect macros than other subjects, partly due to the work of people like Richard Bartz. That isn't to say that no anthropod picture will ever be promoted again, just that it will have to be something extra special, even among Featured Pictures. Sarcastic ShockwaveLover (talk) 00:21, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
Also, don't get too disheartened if people don't like an image you think is great.Considering the multitude of backgrounds and tastes we have here, it's really amazing that we can agree on anything! Sarcastic ShockwaveLover (talk) 01:14, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you for offering to explain your support vote. It's OK. If you supported the image per Almog, who said that "With proper text and put in a proper historical context it will serve Wikicommon's purpose as a picture of unique historic value" I could understand that. Honestly I was much more concerned about you supporting the other nomination, which did not have neither a proper text nor a proper historical context, and which was not added to the right categories at all. Of course you do not own me any explanations at all. You are entitled to have your own opinion, and although I might disagree with you sometimes, I do respect your opinion.
