I guess that the dynamic range with the direct sunlight is quite high, or is it compensated by the snow? Which software and hardware (special Pano head, lens / focal length) did you use? --Tuxyso (talk) 08:13, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Djupfjorden, Moskenesøya, Lofoten
  • Hi, this is an ”old” picture (ok, from 2010...) and I think I've learned quite much since then. But when I was in the same place the last year I tested different kind of compositions and places to take the shot. I ended up a similar looking composition because I still felt that a better spot and composition was very difficult to find. In my taste, the left ridge was quite necessary to include because otherwise I wouldn't have liked how the coast was so close to the left edge of the picture. In addition, the left ridge is so high and close that the composition would only get more weird by including the top of that mountain (then the left line wouldn't go out from the top). So in my opinion, this was a good enough compromise but I understand the issue very well. --Ximonic (talk) 14:43, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking it was special for the stunning and unique woodcut art style you probably wouldn't see in any other game, being a higher resolution than most screenshots. Cutaway diagram of a supercell storm.
  • OK, I'll try to explain: Why is the horizon (not sure if that's really supposed to be a horizon, but it looks like one) tilted? That doesn't make any sense to me. Why are some of the words smaller/less bold than others (e.g. "Virga" vs. "Anvil")? "Storm movement" is hard to read. "Anvil backshear" is hard to read on that (partly) nearly white background. Same thing with the "of a" in the heading. What purpose does that half transparent background of that heading have anyway? The whole heading is is imho the main reason it looks like an advertisement: In a scientific publication or textbook you would hardly ever find a heading/title within the illustration itself. Things like that always go into the descriptive text below the image ("Fig. 34: Anatomy of a Supercell. Some more detailed description following here.") – translated to Wikipedia that would be the descriptive text below the thumbnail. Sorry, but at the moment that's an  Oppose per The Photographer. Don't get me wrong: The core graphics and the general idea have great potential, but there is just too much unnecessary stuff going on around that. --El Grafo (talk) 09:50, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I moved the Anvil backshear label, and increased the opacity of Storm movement. I reduced the tilt (though I don't like having the horizon perfectly horizontal). The reason for the different fontweights is to emphasize the important features—the "key" features of a supercell. The details on what kind of precipitation falls where is less important so I put is in a lighter fontweight. I put the heading there partly because its sister diagram (File:Hurricane-en.svg) also has the same style heading, and it makes it more "standalone"—if it comes up in a google image search, people will immediately know it's a supercell and not a regular thunderstorm or strange icecream sculpture. Regarding textbooks, it's not uncommon for the bigger, more important diagrams to have their own dedicated title—in my biology textbook, there's a large diagram of an animal and plant cell, and at the top it says "Animal Cell" and "Plant Cell" in big print.—Kelvinsong (talk) 13:03, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  •  weak support The photo and composition is very appealing and defintely a great shot. Congratulations! Despite the beauty of the image one should consider that the encylopedic value of it is very limited. The sculpture is called "Sunken Village" and as one can see on the WWW page of the artist Timm Ulrichs the artistic statement has no association to the Allianz arena. Showing the sculpture in the way as it is done here could lead to misleading interpretations. --Tuxyso (talk) 15:55, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cosmologist Jim Peebles at 25th Anniversary of the Canadian Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics.
Thank you for nominating this image. Unfortunately, it does not fall within the Guidelines and is unlikely to succeed for the following reason: Quality isn't OK, too yellowish - false white balance, noisy and false focus point: the eyes must be sharp, a part of the forehead is overexposed, the rest shadowed. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 07:10, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply] Anyone other than the nominator who disagrees may override this template by changing {{FPX}} to {{FPX contested}} and adding a vote in support. Voting will then continue in the usual way. If not contested within 24 hours, this nomination may be closed.

South arm of the transept of the basilica of the Holy Savior in Dinan (France)
I'm not found of HDR pictures (looks unnatural to me), I don't really want to try it. One of the points of this picture is to show the contrast that does exist between the sun-bathed tainted glass that illuminate the retable and the parts of the church that remain in the shadow. IMHO, it would be a distortion of reality to make an equally exposed picture. --EdouardHue (talk) 20:33, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose While the objective may be to show the contrast between the illuminated parts and the shadow, there should really be some detail in the shadow areas and I doubt anyone would suggest the whole image be equally exposed, I certainly would not. More importantly most of the stained glass window highlights are blown out and ruin the image even if you accept the high contrast. Ww2censor (talk) 21:17, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a new version with more details in the shadow - they come at the cost of some noise in the lower right corner, albeit stronger noise reduction. Can't do much for the highlights though, as it was a sunny white sky outside. --EdouardHue (talk) 20:51, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately for me the window highlights are still a major problem even though the shadow detail has improved a little. Ww2censor (talk) 08:18, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Common Pierrot butterfly seen in Kadavoor, India
  •  Support Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Gets the DOF just right with the right kind of background; love the detail on the antennae and the wing fringes. May be our best butterfly pic, ever. Daniel Case (talk) 18:18, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, Daniel for your kind words. This nomination (thanks Pine for that) reminds me the old good days that I spent most of my weekend with my little friends in Kadavoor. I wandered with my camera around the bushy-weedy-unattended places near my home, wetlands and water streams near the paddy fields from the morning to evening on those days. I love all insects, but butterflies and dragonflies show more interest on me. They show their love by flying around and chasing me. That makes me humble; I sat with them, kneel or lay on the grounds to make me smaller and smaller to make them more comfortable to play with me. JKadavoor Jee 05:48, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Info @99of9, Jkadavoor: I nominated the PNG versions with intent. Compare them to the SVG file which is rendered poorly by Mediawiki. --тнояsтеn 06:27, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Comment It's possible to improve the SVG to get your expected rendering, but I understand not wanting to convert text to paths. Then at least can you export to high-resolution pngs? --99of9 (talk) 06:45, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment Hi, I am the creator of the map(s). As to the SVG/PNG question: Just like a photographer I want my works to have the best quality possible. Currently, the SVG renders do not look as good as I want them to, especially when it comes to text. I could convert text objects to paths of course, but I think that would be counterproductive—text objects are (and should be) an integral part of SVG, and if they do not work properly, the SVG renderer needs improvement.
The SVG version of the vatican map has been created in a hurry yesterday, when I was told about this featured picture nomination. It is intended as a working file for future use or translations. Unfortunately my Illustrator version does not produce useful SVG files, so I had to edit the code by hand and use Inkscape. This is not meant to be an excuse, but an explanation why obviously something went wrong with the extraterritorial pattern.
If you regard the PNG format as not suitable for a featured map, I will respect and accept your opinion. For me, the quality of a map (or other graphics) is not primarily defined by its file format.
As to the resolution: I have just uploaded larger renders. Large enough?
And thank you to everyone who voted Pro. :-)

Comment Try using an invisible text layer. Group all the text, and duplicate it. Add a rectangle outside the page border. Select a copy of the text, set its opacity to 0, and group it with the rectangle (it serves as a handle so youcan select it again). Then convert the other text group to paths. Perfect typography, and text data saved.—Kelvinsong (talk) 11:02, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

SHORT DESCRIPTION
Comment Dear Chmee2, it is tough call. I left it because so the wires a a place to hang on to due to the diagonal. However, better to have it like this and have the final user crop according to need, if any. I know it is borderline... --Tomascastelazo (talk) 18:05, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Less is indeed more: more crop. The right hand side draws the eye and is messy with cut-off-birds and the insulator and bits of pole. By all means upload the uncropped version for users to take whatever crop they want from it, but the Featured Picture should be artistically cropped imo, not just source material. I can think of three crops that are stronger:
  • a wide landscape format image of the two or three horizontal wires only
  • a tall portrait format, or a square format image of the three horizontal wires taken around the left third or so
  • a square format image involving the crossing wires (these may require the odd half-bird to be cloned).
Of these my favourite is a square crop starting at 183x215 of 2084x2084 size. This has strong diagonal elements (top-left, bottom right) and emphasizes the vertical repeat of the wires and the horizontal repeat of the birds, without any mess off to the left. I'm out of time to upload this tonight but suggest it be considered. Colin (talk) 19:41, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Colin, well, give it a shot... I will in the meantime look for other pics I took that day and maybe overwrite. Regards, --Tomascastelazo (talk) 04:50, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Semitic Poppy (Papaver umbonatum) in the Nataf area
Question I didn't understand your meaning. Can you explain what you mean more simply for me please? --SuperJew (talk) 06:22, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The JPG records levels of red, green and blue for each pixel in numbers between 0 and 255. The mix of these gives all the colours of the JPG. If an image gets over-exposed then the numbers hit 255 and no tonal variation is seen. Often all three colours get "blown" and you see pure white. But sometimes just one colour (channel) is blown. In this case, red. Some image programs let you see a histogram of the range of colour levels in an image. See this link for an online alternative (you may have to click the link below the image to see the histogram). You will see that the red channel has peak at the far right of the histogram indicating a lot of pixels have 255 for red. There's not much one can do if the camera saves a JPG other than to take it again with a lower exposure if possible. Photographing on an overcast day rather than bright sunlight can also help as this lowers the range of brightess, keeping things within the range the camera can cope with. If using a DSLR and outputting RAW files, then there is a little more scope to rescue things, but not a lot. Colin (talk) 08:00, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Question Ok, so how does this make this specific picture less good? Looking at this picture doesn't seem to me as if this "blown" channel affects the quality --SuperJew (talk) 08:11, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your honest review and the positive comment about the quality of my photos. •  weak oppose I've looked several times on this photo and finally concluded that I cannot support it. For sure the motive has definitely FP potential and is technically well photographed. But the main reason for decline is the tight composition at the top and at the left and right. I guess that are a lot of disturbing objects due to the currently running construction phase of the building nonetheless the composition is for my visual impression not convincing. Another reason is the construction phase. For sure: It has documentary value, but for an FP of a building I expect a building without the disturbing scaffolding around it. Probably you make a new photo when the arena is ready. --Tuxyso (talk) 21:41, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sarah Saartjie Baartman
  •  Info created by Weber, de Lasteyrie and Georges Cuvier - uploaded, stitched, restored and nominated by me -- Jebulon (talk) 16:24, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support In the volume II of the "Illustrations of Natural History of Mammals", between images of a corsican sheep and of a monkey, one can find these two drawings. Sarah Saartjie Baartman was a slave in South Africa where she was born, exhibited in freak shows in Europe, forced into prostitution in England and France, and finally studied as a "specimen" of natural history by Cuvier, a few months before her death. He made a cast of her body (I remember I saw it in the "Musée de l'Homme" in Paris when I was young), and gave many explanations about inferiority of some human races, especially the african... But we have now to remember that she was a person and a women. Her remains were repatriated to her homeland, the Gamtoos Valley in South Africa, only on May 2002. One can read very interesting articles in many wikipedias about this person. These are 1815 very high quality and rare pictures. -- Jebulon (talk) 16:24, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Support per Cayambe -- George Chernilevsky talk 18:51, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose because it hurts (me personally as I too a human). "Images must not unfairly ridicule or demean the subject." I think Commons:Photographs of identifiable people is applicable to artworks too. Just my personal opinion; not interested for a discussion. JKadavoor Jee 06:30, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose I totally agree with Jkadavoor. Jacopo Werther iγ∂ψ=mψ 08:21, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm afraid you both completely misunderstood the purpose of this nomination. This image is far much less ridiculous than all others of the category. Actually, it does not unfairly ridicule or demean the subject at all, because it was very seriously published for a 1815 scientific purpose. She spoke three european languages, was a good musician (said Cuvier), and she looked really like this. That's one of the bad faces of History, history of science, history of litterature (Victor Hugo spoke about her), history of cinema (several movies about her story), history of the relationships between western world and african nations (France voted in 2002 a special law for the restitution of her remains to South Africa and Khoïkhoï people), history of ethnology, history of racism. Again, my advice is to read the articles.Jee, I'm surprised that you are not "interested for a discussion", I thought you were always "interested for a discussion" Clin--Jebulon (talk) 08:24, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Georges Cuvier today would be subject to the international courts. What he did with Mrs. Sarah Baartman can not be forgiven, he soiled humanity and he discredited science. It's a shame for France who waited until 2002 to recognize his actions and return the body to the family. But mostly this is a shame for all of us, we have to think. Do not want to see it, do not want to talk, makes us complicit. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 08:56, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support -- As above. But we shouldn't be ashamed about the actions of our ancestors. The fact that most of us strongly reject those actions is a clear sign that a significant social evolution is taking place (at least in our part of the world). Bravo! -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 10:30, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support -- per others --Llez (talk) 12:30, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support -- per the three previous ones + « Those who forget their past...» (see George Santayana). --JLPC (talk) 13:18, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Because the nomination is an important historical piece of work illustrating how perceptions of other cultures have evolved over the last few centuries. It also has high technical quality. This historical evidence needs to be featured to remind us not to return to such views on other cultures again. It is good for a country to reconcile with its past this way. For me, as a Dane it is also a reminder of the active part "my country" had in slavery in the West Indies, where it was not forbidden until 1848. --Slaunger (talk) 19:25, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Future generations may see our fascination with zoos and performing animals in similar light as we are seeing this image? There are countless things that are acceptable today that may be unacceptable for future generations and it is the same with history. History cannot be changed but whatever bad happened can be remembered so that it can never be repeated again. -- ~y (talk) 21:52, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support It is a good quality illustration and an excellent restoration job that illustrates a cultural, social and historical significant figure. --NJR_ZA (talk) 10:25, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank you very very much ! I am very happy and proud to get a support of a citizen of South-Africa, who surely knows deeply what I mean.--Jebulon (talk) 11:50, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      •  Comment I can not speak for South Africa, only for myself. Personally I think the illustration says more about human nature in general than it does about the individual depicted. I have visited her grave site a number of times (not specifically because it is her grave, but also because it is situated on a magnificent lookout point) and was shocked on more than one occasion due to the state of the grave. In my mind vandalism[2] of the grave is far more demeaning to Baartman than this illustration will ever be. The history of Saartjie Baartman is controversial, but I think that anyone today that look at this illustration and then read her history may benefit by asking themselves when I first looked at the illustration, did I see a freak or a fellow human being? --NJR_ZA (talk) 13:14, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • Fully agree. Again, you understood very well my meaning when I nominated this picture.--Jebulon (talk) 15:28, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
