Commons Guide

[edit]

Hello,

Having seen a number of your pictures in QI and FP sections, I was wondering if you would be interested in sharing some of your knowledge and assist in writing of a photography guide for Commons users?

Could you please see this page:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Photography_Guide_Project_Alpha

Please consider participating in this. Thank you.

Hello,
Unfortunately the project page was deleted because of lack of media (I suppose). An undeletion request has been filed and I hope to have the page up on later day. In the meanwhile, sorry for inconvenience. I will notify you on the further developments. --Thermos 03:24, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Project page has been moved to commons: namespace --Tony Wills 23:23, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind invitation. I guess that I as a dinosaur who prefers old fashioned analog slides am not really the perfect contributor to most topics at this page. The only point I would explicitely advise is that if you are taking slides (or print film) and leave the work of digitizing to some random lab for automatic scans (for instance Kodak Photo CD) the most criticised point of the results will be "blury image". At least this was the reason why several of my potential FPs were rejected. Andreas Tille 07:06, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Animation of Geysir

requires a lot of work because the images have to be rotated and shifted. I saved the parameters to get this animation because it is rerendered once I rebuild my web pages (see the description). What do you think about resolution and size? What would make sense according to your opinion
On second thought, it might be better to upload several individual frames at larger resolution. --MarkSweep 05:01, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I'm working on it and the first image (last state of erruption because I had some other reason for this image) is just uploaded.

Well, certainly no one can say that you're not a principled man. ;) pfctdayelise 05:15, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I probably can not hide that I'm German. Principles are sometimes stronger than common sense. ;-) Andreas Tille 06:36, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HI Andrea

This was what I was talking about with the crop, The page can be tag for delete if you wish just let me know and I'll nominate/support Gnangarra 16:57, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the cropping suggestion. This is very helpful. When I shot the image my intention was to catch also the end of the steam cloud but perhaps this is confusing for people who did not stand at the spot and got a feeling for the situation there. I think we should leave your cropped version for the moment and I will add it to the FPC-page for comments (not as candidate). If people agree to this version I will probably crop some bits of the sky and perhaps also from the foreground to get the width to height ration to a more usual value and try it again on the FPC list. Thanks again Andreas Tille 06:01, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
On a second look perhaps my plan for further cropping is stupid because the quadratic format is also nice - I have to sleep about it. ;-) Andreas Tille 06:03, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Slightly Impressed

[edit]

You contributed a nice photo today. I have no idea how you can *afford* to develop Debian/Linux and buy photography equipment, but thought someone should give you a small thanks for contributing to the world through free software and unencumbered photos.

Thank you for the warm words (whoever they said 86.34.234.247?). On the other hand I just want to clarify things: I'm engaged in Debian/Linux to finally save time because I get a nearly trouble free operating system. It's not about money (even if a license for another operating system costs as much as a high quality lens). Moreover you might underestimate that there are people who earned as much money in Free Software business that they can spend a fortune for photography equipment. ah, da bin ich ja mal auf die Reaktion gespannt. Diese Urheberrechtsverletzung kann sie teuer zu stehen kommen, wenn du's drauf anlegst.

Sehr geehrter Herr Tille,
es tut mir sehr leid, dass ich Ihre Bilder ohne vollständige Quellenangabe in unser

Ich war sehr froh, so schöne Aufnahmen vom Vatnajökull und von einem Geysir zu finden

Hi, your Image:OeraefajoekullMorning.jpg is used in both the german and the englisch-speaking wikipedia to illustrate the Skaftafellsjökull. Is this correct? The glacier in the foreground *could* be the Skaftafellsjökull, but since was taken in the morning i rather think it is taken from the east; the Skaftafellsjökull is on the west though. Can you confirm that the glacier in the foreground is the Skaftafellsjökull? Thanks, --Wirthi 19:10, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the statement "the Skaftafellsjökull is on the west though" sounds a little bit weak if you do not determine your view point. If you are looking from the camping site inside (or near?) the national park, you are right, the glacier is in the East. But the photo was not taken from the camping site but from a hostel about 50km (??) in East direction because in winter time the camping site was not open. So well, I can not confirm that i really is Skaftafellsjökull, because I might be wrong in differentiating all these ice masses, but chances are very good that it is right regarding the location and the direction. Unfortunately Google maps has to low resolution to find this out. Andreas Tille 10:19, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
if this picture was taken 50 km to the east, it was taken from the other side of Oeraefajoekull (we are looking at it from the east, not from the west). Then, this can't be Skaftafellsjökull as this is on the western side of Oeraefajoekull. --Wirthi 08:08, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I fail to follow your East-West-logic. If you have an URL for a higher resolution map I'd be happy to mark the point from where I shot the image. Andreas Tille 15:50, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Almost eight years later. This is NOT Öræfajökull. The glacier in the foreground IS Skaftafellsjökull, and the mountain IS Kristínartindar, above Skaftafellsheiði. Here is the hiking map from Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park: http://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/media/skjol/Sudursv_Skaftafell.jpg. The picture is taken approximately from the Southernmost end of Mt. Hafrafell (where the map says "Háls"), facing almost directly to the North. Source: I work for the national park, and I'm there now. --Siggi31 (talk) 20:47, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Making the playing field level again

Lieber Andreas,

Comment Ack Ram-Man - so I normally would Oppose,
but I marked my vote as neutral because there is
one more Oppose listed here than it should be.
Now the final calculation should be fair again.
Andreas Tille 10:00, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

-- Klaus with K 11:25, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

-- Klaus with K 16:31, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tillea,
Thanks fo uploading your picture(s) of the great wall to commons!
While cleaning up Category:Great Wall of China I found your image without a local information (Badaling, Mutianyu, ???).

Picture(s):

Can you please tell me on my discussion page where is it from.
Thank you D-Kuru 14:13, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for helping
--D-Kuru 08:41, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
First I had no idea where your image could be taken. Then some time passed. Today I watched your images again and saw something very interesting:
Have a closer look to a photo on you page: http://fam-tille.de/china/peking/15_great_wall/tn/gw_06.jpg.index.html
There is a person wearing a white jacket and a green cap. If you have a look at the special form of the rocks above her you see that they are ident with the rocks on the left side (middle of high) of Great Wall Badaling.jpg and with the rocks on GreatWall Badaling.jpg (again: left side, but a bit below the middle of high)
I thought that you might be interested in

Profile size and activity criterion for Commons:Meet our photographers

[edit]

Dear member of Commons:Meet our photographers,

Two issues have recently been raised at Commons talk:Meet our photographers:

Profile size creep
The page is becoming increasing cluttered due to a tendency among some members to make personal profiles, which are unreasonably large. You are kindly requested to consider the size used by your profile and consider if it has a reasonable size. Note that the same message is being send to all members, so it is up to you to use your own good judgement in this. We are not interesting in setting up exact quantitatve rules. It should be a matter of common sense.
Activity criterion
It has been suggested to introduce an activity criterion in addition to the minimum 10 FPs criterion to be included on the list. You are kindly requested to voice your opinion on this proposal.

Publication of your photo, Castel St Angelo at night.

[edit]

Hello

I am an archaeologist working in northern England and have just completed a new book entitled ‘Hadrian and his Wall’. The first part is a biography of Hadrian, and in this I would very much like to use your fine photo of the Castel St Angelo (Hadrian's mausoleum) at night. Given that you have placed the image on Wikimedia, I hope this will be okay, and by way of thanks I would like to send you a copy of the book when it is published. If you would like a copy of the book please let me know the address I should send it to.

The image will be credited as ‘Photo: Andreas Tille/Wikimedia’, unless you advise me otherwise.

To ensure I get it promptly, I would be very grateful if you could please copy any reply to paulfrodsham@hotmail.com .

Thank you very much.

Best wishes

Thanks for uploading File:Waystone.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Yours sincerely, JuTa 22:16, 31 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, I admit I do not remember to have ever touched that image. I can't say anything about its licensing status. I realised that I'm listed as latest uploader - can't remember anyway. The image is definitely not shot by me. Andreas Tille 21:17, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Iceland in Winter has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
