Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

As a courtesy to other editors, it is Commons:Signatures policy to sign your posts on talk pages, user talk pages, deletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and the date will then automatically be added along with a timestamp when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.

Can I ask you for advice on the suggestion made by MMXX regarding the adding of source as Own work to the file, where should that go exactly in the Edit page once I upload the file, if I can reupload it again with the correct reference.

Hello, please answer few questions, I hope we could undelete it after that. is it actually a painting, or a photo tuned to painting? if it is a painting, did you paint it by yourself?

Also please explain about above files, did you make them by yourself? if yes, how and when?

Thanks for the reply, it's a painting of a photo, the photo was taken by me using my own camera during an event, and I then used the photo as a model for a painting I made myself, I then photographed the painting using my own camera to be able to upload it to wikimedia commons, to use it on his wikipedia pages. so I'm the copyright holder for both the photo, the painting and the photo of the painting.

Regarding File:KingHussein&HM.jpg it's a screenshot from a video I filmed myself in 1998 during an event, hence the odd position of the photo "from the back", I hold the copyright for the video as it was taken using my camcorder, I also took the photo File:حيدر محمود.jpg back in 2002, then scanned the photo, but I'm not using the file anymore.

You mean instead of the painting? I'd like to upload the painting if that's ok, I don't see a reason not to be able to use the painting in terms of copyright as I've explained, I'm also releasing the copyright on the painting, so anyone can use it, if anybody comes and claims it to be theirs after that, go ahead and delete both it and my account.

No problem, you could keep the painting too, however to be sure that you are creator of the original work, I need you to upload the original file too.  ■ MMXX  ^talk 22:17, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

I've uploaded the photo: File:HaiderMahmoud2012-1.JPG which is the original photo used in the painting, I've played around with the colors in the painting in terms of the background and tie to neutralize the darkness/brightness seen in the original photo.

I hope this is alright.

Great, thanks very much, not sure where to go from here though, does this mean the file is undeleted and I can reuse it in the wikipedia pages? if not, when can I reuse the file? please excuse my ignorance of procedural protocols.
