I have fixed quite a few pages from Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: mismatching birthdate, that a good way to find minor errors in our data. However, I don't get why Creator:Carlo Donelli is categorized there. Info seem to match Wikidata (there is also a second more precise date in Wikidata, but it has a lower rank and thus should not be retrieved). --Zolo (talk) 07:52, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Creator:Francis Bourgeois has the same problem. I don't know what it going on, but I notice that when I set my language to French two birth dates are displayed, with slightly different spelling (just one date shown in English). --Zolo (talk) 08:04, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
I edited the items three and four days ago. I think the category changes just lag behind, so do the creator pages up to letter G in Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: quick statements. Purging doesn't help. I'd also like to know why it takes so long …--Marsupium (talk) 12:14, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
The way to purge the pages one has to do an null edit to the page (save without changes). One can also run pywikibot touch.py script. I was keeping many of the categories up to date by such means, but I am traveling at the moment and did not have a chance. I will try this weekend to touch them. --Jarekt (talk) 03:31, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
I looked at Creator:Carlo Donelli and Creator:Francis Bourgeois and the Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: mismatching birthdate is not right. I will look into it. In the mean time if you confirm that the dates are the same on Commons and Wikidata than just remove commons version and the category will disappear. --Jarekt (talk) 03:38, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Showing the occupation data from Wikidata even if no country of citizenship present

I've been adding a bunch of people to Wikidata per Category:Creator templates without Wikidata link. When the occupation and country of citizenship are listed there, it pulls nicely in (as "German photographer" or "Romanian painter" or whatever) but when there is only an occupation, nothing pulls in automatically. Is there a reason for this choice? To me, having occupation only ("painter" or "photographer") is more useful in the Creator template than having nothing. Sweet kate (talk) 22:27, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Sweet kate, You are right. It is something that should be fixed. --Jarekt (talk) 11:41, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

When Creator image is not the Wikidata image

I have been repeatedly reverting changes to Creator:J. Campbell Cory, since the image (a self portrait of the artist) does not match the image on Wikidata. This apparently places the template into Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: mismatching image, that fastidious editors feel they must rectify. I really don't like this "one size fits all" approach, where the photographic image associated with Wikidata automatically becomes the default. The Creator template page states "Self-portraits are preferable."The best image of a subject may not always be the best image for a creator template. We're not all robots enslaved by and at the mercy of Wikidata. How can I solve this problem, and prevent future issues? Animalparty (talk) 18:33, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

I was the one that did the first removal. Now I added File:J. Campbell Cory self-portrait 1915.jpg as preferred image on Wikidata. If nobody reverts me than we can remove the image will disappear from the "problem" category. --Jarekt (talk) 04:10, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

Creator:Leonid Pasternak

Birth date does not shown in Creator:Leonid Pasternak... -- Geagea (talk) 08:43, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

I patched it for time being and added to the list of things to test before next version. --Jarekt (talk) 16:53, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Cryptic parameter syntax

The example contains the cryptic sequence {{{1|}}} that is never explained- I understand it has something to do with template parameters, but what exactly?! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kyegupov (talk • contribs) 23:10, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Ok this seems to be a ref to Help:Parser_functions_in_templates - maybe it's worth to add an explicit link to that? Kyegupov (talk) 23:25, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
The variable option is explained in the documentation. It is used to pass info from the page that calls creator template, like Creator:Ansel Adams to the actual template:Creator. Templates do not function correctly without it. --Jarekt (talk) 04:09, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Authority control values

As can be seen at Category:Mary Delany, this template displays fewer authority control parameters than {{Authority control}}. Is there a reason for that? Can we sync them? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:53, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

My question is: do we need additional values in the Creator template? From my understanding there are more potential authority identifiers than are displayed in even {{Authority control}}. Animalparty (talk) 20:50, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Why do we need fewer than in the AC template? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:18, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
 Support syncing. And more would also be fine. Often even the very useful RKDartists ID is trimmed. --Marsupium (talk) 18:44, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Parameter status in documentation not correct

Many parameters are said to have "deprecated" status, "Wikidata" parameter is said to be "required" in the template documentation. For the commons user type the "Wikidata" parameter isn't required, but even discouraged and thus other parameters aren't deprecated. I think we should be explicit about that. No? --Marsupium (talk) 18:44, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

I do not know what to do with "commons user type" (templates with Type=commons user). they are mostly outside of the scope of the template, but as with any template: deletion would require a lot of cleanup and I do not feel like dealing with them. At the moment templates with Type=commons user do not show up in most maintenance categories. The documentation page lists 2 syntax modes one with wikidata link and one without it. Most templates with Type=commons user should use the second syntax. --Jarekt (talk) 14:35, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Copy/paste name from template?

Is it possible to allow the copy/pasting of the creator's name straight from the template? That would help with attribution. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 04:43, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

I am not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate? --Jarekt (talk) 14:54, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
I have to click through to Wikidata in order to copy and paste a creator's name for attribution (off-wiki). Clicking the person's name in an attempt to highlight it for copying just results in the template opening or closing. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 15:56, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
I see, I have the same problem and I do not know the solution. You can click on the "pen" icon and go to the creator page and copy it from there. it is also possible to place cursor outside of the template and select just the name inside, but that is quite hard. --Jarekt (talk) 15:57, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Major rewrite

Hi, I just did major rewrite of Module:Creator. Please report any issues here. --Jarekt (talk) 04:24, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

See Creator:Yaakov Saar seems to be some problem. Also I triedto add he wiki style but unsuccessful. can you fix it as well. -- Geagea (talk) 08:49, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
I fixed the problem in Creator:Yaakov Saar. The problem occurred when the nationality is missing in wikidate. So it should be fixed in Module:NationAndOccupation. -- Geagea (talk) 09:04, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jarekt: Is that the cause of the error at Creator:Urbain J. Kinet? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:45, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
Yes, country of citizenship (P27) is missing in Wikidata.-- Geagea (talk) 14:26, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
I Fixed the Module:NationAndOccupation code, so Creator:Urbain J. Kinet and other similar cases work now. Thanks for reporting. --Jarekt (talk) 17:09, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

Option parameter problem

It looks like the {{{Option}}} parameter has a problem, simply does not do anything, visible e.g. here:

Don't know if it has anything to do with the major rewrite … --Marsupium (talk) 10:55, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

I am looking at this, now. --Jarekt (talk) 17:11, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
Fixed now. The issue was with a page that did not change since April. Was it broken since then? --Jarekt (talk) 00:30, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I have not been very active in Wikis recently, but I also noticed the issue yesterday. I would find it surprising that two of us saw the same day a problem that has been around for 6 months. --Zolo (talk) 12:43, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Linkback

@Jarekt: I just created

Willi Maillard  (1879–1945)  wikidata:Q23000654

Description painter
Date of birth/death 26 February 1879 Edit this at Wikidata 15 July 1945 Edit this at Wikidata
Location of birth Berlin
Authority file
creator QS:P170,Q23000654

based only on Wikidata. The linkback points to Willi Maillard instead of Creator:Willi Maillard. I assume you're using Commons Creator page (P1472) and didn't add the creator prefix. Can you have a look? Multichill (talk) 12:15, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

Will do. --Jarekt (talk) 15:57, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Fixed --Jarekt (talk) 14:36, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

individual creator page documentation

I updated Template:Creator/documentation. Is it clear? --Jarekt (talk) 18:49, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

Looks fine to me. BTW: Do we (still) need the "Localization" section there? --Marsupium (talk) 11:18, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks I removed localization section. --Jarekt (talk) 14:35, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

Need help translating text of the issue boxes

In the current version of the template files in Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: item missing linkback and Category:Creator templates without home category categories will have issue box displaying message about the issue and how to fix it. The text and translations can be found at Module:I18n/creator. Is the English message clear and if so can I ask for translations? --Jarekt (talk) 14:35, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

I've changed the English text slightly and added a German translation.
BTW (also using this page as a de facto kind of WikiProject talk page): I've started with replacing the labels of Template:Kinship with Wikidata labels in Module:Kinship. I've set up a comparison table at Module talk:Kinship/label comparison. Perhaps you can check for the labels in your languages if Wikidata and Commons should be aligned, or if they should stay different and if so why that, and leave a note on that page! Thank you in advance! --Marsupium (talk) 11:34, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Number of Authority Control identifiers

Based on this discussion (and other similar ones I had) I changed the code so Creator template will show all Authority Control identifiers in all namespaces except for "File" namespace. In File namespace only 6-7 most relevant identifiers (prioritizing some based on user's language) will be shown as before in order to keep the pages less cluttered and readable. --Jarekt (talk) 17:39, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

This is a good example of houw wikidata drives me mad sometimes. Someone on wikidata took his deathdate from KultNav and translated this as "1 October 1652". However, the only information we have is that he was burried on 3 October 1652. How do I add this information on wikidata? The best I could to is to delete death date on wikidata altogether. No information is better than false information. Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 10:36, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

@Vincent Steenberg: never remove statements like here, that's like remove the license template here on Commons and it just triggered my bot to import 1652 as the death year. That might not have been to most precise date, but at least it is correct. Unfortunately some user decide to change it without proper sourcing. In these kind of cases I dig up a proper source and try to improve the item. Hope this helps. Multichill (talk) 20:31, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

@Jarekt: on Creator:Tivadar Zemplényi I noticed a link to d:Q1467049 which redirects to d:Q7810390. Would be nice to have a maintenance category in these cases. Looking at mw:Extension:Wikibase Client/Lua#mw.wikibase.entity, I'm not sure how to do that. Multichill (talk) 16:20, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

Multichill as far as I can tell there is no way to tell if an item ID correct or redirect. I wrote about it in d:Wikidata:New_convenience_functions_for_Lua#Data_access_3. The redirects are a big issue if you are using Quickstatements, as any operations fail if the item ID is a redirect. --Jarekt (talk) 02:59, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
@Hoo man: ^^ Multichill (talk) 10:04, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
@Jarekt: turns out it was really easy. I'm a complete LUA noob, can you check and deploy? I updated the documentation. This might make some other fields of interest available for us to use here or in other templates. Multichill (talk) 13:14, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into this. I always assumed that entity.id is the same as item ID provided to mw.wikibase.getEntity, and I guess in great majority of cases that is true. I will have to revisit bunch of other templates that take item ID (q-code). Thanks. --Jarekt (talk) 16:17, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
Excellent, Category:Creator templates with redirected Wikidata link is filling up. Right now everything gets added if this gives too much noise we can always move it to the creator namespace only section. Multichill (talk) 17:10, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
I was thinking about namespace filter, but in some cases people or other templates use {{Creator}} directly without specialized templates in "Creator" namespace. So this way is better. --Jarekt (talk) 18:28, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
Category:Creator templates with redirected Wikidata link is empty again, but lets keep an eye on it.--Jarekt (talk) 03:40, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

Hyphen, dash

For work location, when there's a time span (e.g. Creator:Pieter Cornelisz. Verbeeck, "Utrecht (1638-1642)" etc), this template uses hyphens (-). It should probably use an en dash (–), as the use of hyphens in that context is often considered to be incorrect, which is not the case for the en dash. This is the difference between 1638-1642 and 1638–1643. /Julle (talk) 18:51, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

I mostly agree with you that dash is preferable to hyphens or "minus" signs. However this template does not add any of them in templates like Creator:Pieter Cornelisz. Verbeeck. It only displays what values people typed in. I guess the template can search for hyphens or "minus" signs in workloc field and replace them with dashes. I will look into it. --Jarekt (talk) 16:25, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
@Jarekt: We have the very same problem when the work period comes from Wikidata. Example: Creator:Lakṣmīpuram Śrīnivāsācārya where all data fields come from Lakṣmīpuram Śrīnivāsācārya (Q48317007). --AFBorchert (talk) 06:55, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
Fixed but please verify. --Jarekt (talk) 12:29, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, Jarekt, this looks better but you have also added spaces to it which is in conflict with typographic rules. See, for example, Friedrich Forssmann and Ralf de Jong, Detailtypografie, ISBN 3-87439-642-8, p. 174, and Robert Bringhurst, The Elements of Typographic Style, ISBN 0-88179-132-6, p. 80. Quote of Bringhurst: “Use close-set en dashes or three-to-em dashes between digits to indicate a range.” Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 13:09, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
Fixed again. Hopefully this time is right. --Jarekt (talk) 13:18, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, Jarekt, this is now perfect :) Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 14:41, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

"Innercollapse"

en:Help:Collapsing#"innercollapse" and "outercollapse" states that is is possible to collapse an element by default when it is in another one. If that can be done for creator and institution inside artwork templates and co, that would be a nice improvement for uses outside the file namespace.--Zolo (talk) 10:10, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

I have tried this about 5 years ago and did not menage to get it to work on Commons. If someone can figure out how to get it to work on Commons using a small test template, I could try to do it for a big one. --Jarekt (talk) 11:44, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
It seems that there is something missing in Commons' config. I have created COM:VP# Innercollapse and outercollapse. --Zolo (talk) 12:53, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
Partially Fixed. Now all Creator and Institution templates added automatically by {{Artwork}} template based on Wikidata are collapsed. --Jarekt (talk) 12:32, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

script error

At the moment a lot of creator templates show the following error: "Lua error in Module:Creator at line 559: table index is nil." Does anybody know what's going on? @Gbarta: , I suggest we wait before this error is fixed before we delete any information here on commons. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 15:33, 26 April 2018 (UTC)

See for an example: Creator:Ab Salm. It seems to have something to do with the workloc field. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 15:54, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
@Jarekt: --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:36, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
Fixed Thanks for reporting that. --Jarekt (talk) 01:23, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Short descriptions

I noticed the creator template for "Luke Sullivan" is showing Iranian instead of Irish. I went to Wikidata to fix this but his nationality is fine. Is there a problem with the way you parse the nationality of "Kingdom of Ireland"? Also please tell me how to fix these if I come across more of them. Thx. Jane023 (talk) 04:30, 25 July 2018 (UTC) {{Edit request}}

Hi, thanks for spotting this! The problem is Module:NationAndOccupation/nationalityLUT:
	Q215530 = 'IR', --Kingdom of Ireland
Admins, please replace 'IR' with 'IE'! Thank you! --Marsupium (talk) 23:06, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Sort order of work locations

If I remove the local workloc field of Creator:Johann Adam Ackermann the Wikidata retrieved work locations follow neither chronological order nor the order of Wikidata. Would it be possible to sort them chronologically? Thanks a lot in advance, --Marsupium (talk) 12:05, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Less precise birth date ≠ mismatch

Creator:Johann Weikhard von Valvasor has as local birth date "May 1641", Wikidata has "28 May 1641", still it is sorted into Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: mismatching birthdate. Thanks in advance for any improvements! --Marsupium (talk) 15:44, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

Missing localized description

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Creator:Anders_Beer_Wilse&uselang=nb has description=norsk photographer (an untranslated occupation), while for example https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Creator:Anders_Beer_Wilse&uselang=nn has the correct description=norsk fotograf. Where do I translate the word “photographer” into “fotograf” for Norsk Bokmål? Regards, Kjetil_r 18:59, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Kjetil_r, The localization of nationalities is done through [[Module:]] and it happens in 2 places:
  • for inputs provided through the template the occupation is translated through {{Occupation}}, with Wikidata as fallback
  • for inputs provided through the Wikidata item the occupation is translated through entries on Wikidata, like photographer (Q33231)
but {{NationAndOccupation|wikidata=Q144339|lang=nb}} gets the right answer "norsk fotograf". So it must be a bug in Module:Creator. --Jarekt (talk) 14:57, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

NARA ID displayed twice

The US National Archives Identifier ID (d:Q29896325) displays twice in the Creator template with two different abbreviations: see for instance Creator:Ansel Adams and Creator:Jack Kightlinger with duplicate values and external links for "NAID" and "NARA". --Animalparty (talk) 07:23, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

Categorization

As currently implemented, the page Creator:John Doe created with this template is automatically categorized into Category:John Doe. In some cases this is incorrect (for example, see Category:Alexander Binder). Instead, the Creator page should belong to the category identified by the "Commons category" property of the Wikidata item. --R'n'B (talk) 22:00, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

This can be circumvented by adding |Homecat = Alexander Binder (photographer) to Creator:Alexander Binder. --Animalparty (talk) 01:01, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Have the template calculate and display "Lars Persson died 82 years ago. Their works are in the public domain in their country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or less." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk • contribs) 12:58, 15 March 2019‎ (UTC)

This is not necessary as this can be done directly using the data from Wikidata. Example for {{PD-old-auto}} for Sarah Purser whose wikidata entry is Sarah Purser (Q7422719) where date of death (P570) delivers . This can be combined to the following construct
{{PD-old-auto |deathyear={{Str left|{{Ymd|1={{Data|item=Q7422719|property=P570|displayformat=raw}}}}|4}}}}
where {{Data}} fetches a property for a Wikidata entry, displayformat=raw suppresses the conversion to a human-readable format, {{Ymd}} converts it to the standard format YYYY-MM-DD, and {{Str left}} picks the first four characters, i.e. YYYY. There is no need to burden the {{Creator}} template with this as nowadays all these templates fetch the data from Wikidata whenever possible. --AFBorchert (talk) 17:29, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Table on mobile

Wrong Description

How is Description generated based on wikidata items? For example, Creator:Tan Zekai now has a Description of Taiwanese when UI language is English, and 臺灣 when UI is traditional Chinese (zh-hant). It is obviously not drawing from wikidata descriptions because they are Chinese calligrapher and 中國書法家 respectively. I want to know about this because the description Taiwanese is factually wrong. Tan Zekai was a citizen of Taiwan (Q865), aka Republic of China (ROC). ROC became colloquially equivalent to Taiwan after 1949 when KMT lost mainland China, but Tan Zekai died in 1948.--Roy17 (talk) 10:37, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

I guess it takes values from country of citizenship (P27) and occupation (P106). I changed the item's P27 to Republic of China (Q13426199). Problem solved it seems.--Roy17 (talk) 12:31, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Roy17, Description field has kind of a long story:
  • originally it was a free text provided by the description field, however in most cases it only had {{NationAndOccupation}} template with gender, occupation and nationality fields
  • latter gender, occupation and nationality fields were added to {{Creator}} template which called {{NationAndOccupation}} template. That way {{Creator}} description always starts with phrase stating nationality and occupation. Content of description field is added in the second line.
  • when we started fetching data from Wikidata, we got Occupation from occupation (P106), gender from sex or gender (P21). Unfortunately Wikidata community decided not to store nationality information about people and only store country of citizenship (P27) and ethnic group (P172) fields which are not always equivalent and that is where we get them.
In case of Creator:Tan Zekai I see the description now says "Chinese calligrapher" so I guess the problem is solved. But in the future, notice that if the fields on Wikidata do not give you desirable description, one can always add local occupation' and nationality parameters. --Jarekt (talk) 12:35, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Can we incorporate the "copyright status as a creator" field from Wikidata in the template, so we don't have to write it out as prose in the category? RAN (talk) 03:09, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

That need nuance; for example a war artist's work for the UK governmnent can be out of copyright, while their civilan work is not. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:59, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

employer (P108) might be a good property to display

I was just looking at Creator:Iris Tong. It'd be much better if her employer VOA would be shown in the template. The same applies to other journalists, authors, or govt/institutions-commissioned creators, because then users can get to know that many of the creators' work were associated with their respective employers.--Roy17 (talk) 20:55, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Lua error

Error in some pages: Lua error in Module:Creator at line 839: attempt to concatenate local 'lastname' (a nil value).

For example: Creator:Paul Cézanne, Creator:Karl Bulla --Butko (talk) 09:35, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

@Jarekt: mw.wikibase.getLabelByLang may return nil if it finds no label. I think instead of
lastname = mw.wikibase.getLabelByLang(data.lastname, lang)
you should write
lastname = mw.wikibase.getLabelByLang(data.lastname, lang) or ''
and instead of
firstname = mw.wikibase.getLabelByLang(data.firstname, lang)
you should write
firstname = mw.wikibase.getLabelByLang(data.firstname, lang) or ''
(but I’m not confident enough to modify the module myself). By the way, these two look OK now, but others like Creator:Andrea Appiani (Andrea Appiani (Q493349), last name Appiani (Q64788224)) are still broken. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:26, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
Also, the bug seems to depend on interface language: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Creator:Gavin_Newsom?uselang=en is fine, but https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Creator:Gavin_Newsom?uselang=zh is broken. (Language fallback tree is not properly followed?) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:34, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
@Tacsipacsi: I reverted "sortkey" calculation code to earlier version. Raw "mw.wikibase.getLabelByLang" probably should not be used.--Jarekt (talk) 03:56, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Wrong upper casing

@Jarekt: While Creator:Karl Bulla has no script error with English or Hungarian interface language, it has another bug: birth and death place from Wikidata is upper cased—including article titles and even the pencil icon’s file name that would link to Wikidata. I don’t know what does the upper casing, but it should certainly not look like this. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:40, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

@Tacsipacsi: Thanks for reporting this one. My attempt to add "edit at Wikidata" icons proved to be more tricky than suspected. --Jarekt (talk) 03:57, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Can the documentation include guidance on people with identical names?

How to distinguish them? Creator:John Doe (1897) whereby 1897 is the birth year? Or use their occupation in English, such as photographer/writer/journalist? And what happens if some ppl share the same characteristics, being born in the same country in the same year and having the same job? (I'd say it is quite possible for some large countries to have two photographers with the same name for example.)--Roy17 (talk) 09:21, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

On commons we often use dates of birth and death to distinguish people with the same name, dates are easier to comprehend if you do not speak English. It is very rare to two people to have the same name and the same dates. It gets tricky when dates are not known precisely, then I like to use occupation to distinguish people. --Jarekt (talk) 13:30, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

License

{{Edit request}} If I look in the Creator page for an Author (artist), it would be nice if somewhere on the page (preferably next to the Usage parameter) it would suggest the wikitext for the (best and most applicable) license, to use, for that particular creator. Broichmore (talk) 20:29, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

@Broichmore: Could you please clarify what your edit request is about exactly? If it's yet to be discussed, could you please activate the edit request once it's agreed? Thanks, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 16:02, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
All artists' work displayed in commons needs a licence. That license for usage depends on their nationality, and their date of death. Can we link the optimal licence for an artist to the creator page? Broichmore (talk) 18:04, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

George Morley

Not sure where to post this, so posting it here. Category: George Morley and Creator:George Morley are not for the same person, the creator is for Category:George Morley (artist). The Creator template is now linked on the bishop's page, not the artist's page. I don't know how to fix this, as the Creator template already points to the correct Wikidata item, and everything else is automatically generated. LookLook36 (talk) 20:25, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

@LookLook36: The template seems to use the Commons category (P373) statement and not the sitelink, and the statement still pointed to the wrong title. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:03, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Couldn't the {{Creator}} template show the Commons category (P373) as [[:Category:Freddy Tsimba|Freddy Tsimba]] in the header (an additional Commons icon, next to the Wikidata icon) and as a table row in the table, when maximising the infobox?

Example for:

Freddy Tsimba  (1967–)  wikidata:Q3087055

Alternative names
Freddy Bienvenu Tsimba
Description Congolese (DR) sculptor and scenographer
Date of birth 22 August 1967 Edit this at Wikidata
Location of birth Kinshasa

creator QS:P170,Q3087055

This would enhance the navigation (show all works of the Creator via the Category). Geert Van Pamel (talk) 14:55, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

catsort

All ~1,000 creator templates have a cat. sorting by the first name. It must be sorted by the last name. Please fix ist. Best greetings, --Mateus2019 (talk) 10:02, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Can you give example, to show what you mean. I thought we always sort by the last name except for some Asian names with different sorting traditions. --Jarekt (talk) 12:21, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

Authority control problem with NLI

Hello, I am not sure where it's pulling it from, as I do not have the access, but I think there might be an authority control issue with NLI (National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949)) for this specific template (Creator). The base URL should be http://uli.nli.org.il/F/?func=direct&local_base=nlx10&doc_number=$1 instead of what it currently is ( http://aleph.nli.org.il/F/?func=find-b&local_base=NNL10&find_code=SYS&con_lng=eng&request=$1 ). For your consideration. --Omert33 (talk) 08:31, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

Creator template may be adding the creator category automatically

The template seems to be adding the creator category to all pages that call the template. This is often not a desired outcome. Images often belong in a subcategory and not the main creator category. For example, see File:Hoiamis map of Paris (1619) (assembled) – British Library – Flickr.jpg and Category:François Van Hoey. This image only belongs in Category:Map of Paris by François Van Hoey not in his main category. --Robert.Allen (talk) 07:51, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

I may have caused this problem, since I added the category at the bottom of Creator:François Van Hoey. I just removed it and maybe the problem will go away. --Robert.Allen (talk) 23:37, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

Options

Is there any chance we could add a "role" option? For some images, you get, for example, an artist and an engraver, and it's be convenient if we could assign roles in the template, as it can get a little awkward. Downside is it might have a lot of ad hoc roles that wouldn't translate, but those roles have to appear anyway, it's just whether they appear in the template or not. And at least this way we could have some form of translation. Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:13, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

@Adam Cuerden: I'd rather not add more options to the template especially because we already have a way to solve this. Have a look at File:Statue of Liberty 7.jpg:

The artist fields here are based on creator (P170) with roles on Wikidata. You can do this on Wikidata and should also work here on Commons in structured data. Multichill (talk) 17:48, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
Template:Author info can also be used. --Robert.Allen (talk) 07:06, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Additional parameters

Could we have "style of" as a synonym for "manner of", and "and studio" as a synonym for "and workshop", and "copy of" as a synonym for "after"? Those have been used a lot, and it's more efficient to add them here than to correct them individually. DS (talk) 16:17, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

And "perhaps" as a synonym for "possibly". DS (talk) 14:48, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

@MJL: ✓ Done, thanks for pointing it out! (I also checked the German translation, and it doesn’t refer to the author using pronouns, so it already used no gendered language.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:28, 25 December 2022 (UTC)

Edit request and a question

{{Edit request}}

  • Change text "than it is" to ", then it is".
  • Also, a question: If a creator has a user account on Commons and wants to connect their username to a creator-page on commons (or their entry on wikidata), is there a way to do that? So that such an established connection can be used to replace individual permission statements for each artwork from that user? This user here appears to be willing to establish such a connection, but unwilling to have to release files one by one (e.g. via Commons:Email templates/Consent).

--Bensin (talk) 22:56, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

Edit request fulfilled with this edit. About the question I'm not sure. Best, --Marsupium (talk) 13:43, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! I'll ask the question at the Village pump. --Bensin (talk) 23:19, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
