Description

Das erste Bild der HRSC-Kamera, das im Januar 2004 der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert wurde, zeigte das Gebiet Hydraotes Chaos, ein Labyrinth von Tafelbergen, das durch die erodierende Kraft abfließender Wassermassen und in sich zusammenstürzender Hohlräume entstanden ist. Seither umkreiste die Mars Express-Sonde den Mars rund 19.000 Mal in unterschiedlichen Höhen. Dadurch wurde die globale Abdeckung mit Bildauflösungen von bis zu zwölf Metern pro Bildpunkt immer besser. – Die hier abgebildete Szene zeigt einen Blick vom Äquator in Richtung Norden, über jene ganz am Anfang aufgenommene markante Landschaft von Hydraotes Chaos mit ihren über 2.000 Meter hohen "Zeugenbergen" im Vordergrund. Bis zum Horizont erstrecken sich die bis zu 80 Kilometer breiten und über 1.000 Kilometer langen Ausflusstäler Simud Valles (links) und Tiu Valles (rechts).
