Summary

[edit]
Description

"Church ruins with pointed arches and 3 light window adjoining maintained, or possibly modern, square tower, glazed windows"

When is a Stereo Pair not a Stereo Pair? When someone cuts it in two and shows it as a single image :) I was particularly drawn to this shot with the excellent framing of the distant great window in the foreground arch. But where is/was it?

[/photos/91549360@N03/ O Mac] quickly identified this as St Brigid's/Kildare Cathedral clearly prior to its significant reconstruction/ressurection in the late 1870s....

Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton

Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence

Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection

Date: Catalogue range c.1860-1883. But likely c.1860-1875 (church reconstruction)

NLI Ref: STP_1564

This photo shows the view from the (at that time no longer existing) north transept through the crossing tower to the south transept, looking south. The belfry tower on the left was erected in 1856 and attached to the north wall of the chor. This tower was removed during the restoration of the cathedral in 1871–1896. (See Peter Galloway, The Cathedrals of Ireland, p. 122.)
