t was the name of the lame boy, eyed the hungry little fellow fromhead to foot, and then gazed earnestlyinto the childs face, as if there wassomething there that was not common.-His gray eyes had a clear truthfulnessin them that Stephen liked, and therewas a determined look about hismouth which seemed to say that it 26 HOPE ON. would not be his own fault if hestarved. What brings you lagging abouthere ? asked Stephen rather roughly. Ive got nothing else to do, saidlittle Jack, looking up steadily intothe sweepers face, and pausing as hewas about to convey the last spoonfulof the hot potatoes to his mouth. Dont tell me that, said Stephen, I believe theres work for every onein this world if theyll only set to anddo it. Have you got two hands andtwo feet ? Yes, answered Jack, smiling. Well, then, youre better off thanme; Ive only got two hands and onefoot, and yet Id rather lose the otherthan loll against a railing, and whineout about boot-laces to folks thats gotother things to think of.
Text Appearing After Image:
Jack and Stephen Moore. HOPE ON. 29 Jack reddened, but at last he said, If youll tell me something betterIll do it. Stephen thought a minute, and thenreplied, Get a broom and sweep. No ! said Jack ; I cant buy abroom, and besides, there is no cross-ing for me. Well, run errands. Wholl take me ? said the littleboy, looking wistfully at his raggedclothes, which were all fastened to-gether in front with a small woodenskewer. Well, you dont look very respect-able, certainly, said Stephen bluntly; but cant your father get somethingfor you to do ? He has gone away and left Maggieand me. And have you got no mother ? 30 HOPE ON. asked the sweeper in a softenedvoice. No, replied the boy, as he brushedhis sleeve quickly across his face. Mother died a year ago. And whos Maggie ? My sister, and shes going blind. Well, look here, I want to go homefor a bit and help my mother, so youtake my broom and sweep here tillI come back, will you ? and hardlywaiting for a reply, Stephen limpedaway. Jack like
