Botticelli's The Birth of Venus
  •  Info created by Sandro Botticelli, Google Art Project - uploaded by Dcoetzee - nominated by Dcoetzee -- 565 megapixel (30,000 × 18,840) digitization of Botticelli's famous painting The Birth of Venus from the Google Art Project. "It depicts the goddess Venus, having emerged from the sea as a fully grown woman, arriving at the sea-shore." This has levels adjusted from the original Google Art Project work to use the complete value range and make the image more visible, and I've had someone who specializes in Italian art take a look at it to make sure it's not distorting the work (note: my first attempt was brighter than this one, but found to be too inaccurate). We have 13 different files of this complete work at Category:The Birth of Venus (Botticelli), but the other versions have a variety of issues: some have a blue tint, some are low-resolution and/or blurry, some are vertically compressed, some are cropped too tightly, and so on. This image is currently used on 501 pages across 101 projects, and the title is translated into 37 languages and linked to articles on the painting. Additionally, the full original 7.5 gigapixel (109,426 × 68,720) image is made available as a set of 12 tiles at Category:Tile set of The Birth of Venus, and has already been used to create a high-resolution detail at File:Botticelli, Sandro - Nascita di Venere, dettagli Flora.jpg.
Warning: this is a very large image and requires about 2.2 GB of memory to load into a typical application. If you aren't able to open it, try this 8.6 megapixel thumbnail. Dcoetzee (talk) 07:23, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Occasionally we can feature a few of them; just my humble opinion. Besides photographers and illustrators, many other people are working for Commons. I would like to appreciate people like Dcoetzee and Crisco 1492 for spending much time to find, edit and transfer various public domain files to Commons. • I definitely do want to reward our contributors of original works, but I see the primary purpose of Featured Pictures as finding our best and most important works to display on the Main Page, and it's good to have a mix of historical and modern works. It's also helpful, when there are many digitizations of a work available as in this case, to identify one that we think is the best among those we have, as advice to projects choosing among them (it's great to get people who have laid eyes on the work like yourself to offer feedback on the authenticity of the digitization). I only nominate a small number of images from Google Art Project and similar sources, usually those that are visually striking, famous, and high-quality, high-resolution reproductions that are widely used on WMF projects. I'm also still experimenting with the gigapixel tile set uploads and want to see how those are received by the community. I do absolutely agree however, that the Uffizi's photography policy is most unfortunate, and represents the prioritization of licensing income over wide enjoyment of their works. • I agree (again) that "Commons" needs such pictures, and I thank you very much for uploading. But if you want the community to identify the best among the digitizations we have, please try the COM:VIC label, it is exactly on purpose !!--Jebulon (talk) 13:59, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I regard this work high quality and fits perfectly into the screening criteria for a featured picture. Many photos taken by NASA's robots are outstanding, the human is an additional element in the development of photography in the extent of the technology advances. --The Photographer (talk) 14:10, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
